The Grumman Cougar was a modified F9F Panther with a swept wing, which enhanced performance, allowing the US Navy to have a fighter that was comparable to the F-86 and MiG-15. They shared the F9F designation with the Panther, with the first Cougars being the F9F-6. It entered service just too late to see action over Korea but it did replaced the earlier Panthers.
The Cougar was developed as a fighter and a reconnaissance aircraft. The F9F-8P replaced the nose guns with cameras and the later fighter versions could carry early Sidewinder missiles. The Cougar in turn was replaced as the USN’s main fighter in 1958-9 by the F-11 Tiger and F-8 Crusader, however, training Cougars served until 1974.
This is Sword’s model of the F9F-8P Cougar. Sword are a relatively new manufacturer based in the Czech Republic. The kit is injection moulded with resin ejector seat and etch instrument panels and seatbelts from Eduard. The level of detail is excellent with engraved panel lines. The cockpit area is nicely detailed and the casting on the resin parts is really nice.
There are markings for 2 USN aicraft from USS Saratoga and USS Kearsage
